colonial glassmaker

Glassmakers were among the first craftsmen in the colonies. But it was not until 1739 that the first glass factory was started in New Jersey. It made glass for the colonies and England.Glass is a mix of sand and chemicals. The glassmaker blended them in a pot called a crucible. He melted the mixture in a very hot fire. The glassmaker dipped a pipe into the liquid glass. He blew through the pipe to create a glass bubble. Using special tools, he shaped the glass. Or, he could blow glass into a heated mold. If a glassmaker was unhappy with a piece’s look, he could re-heat the glass and begin again. It was hard to make glass because you had to blow throw a tube and it can be fun to because you can make a bubble out of glass and it look’s cool.
